Roomier Xbox One with new controller on the way?

The current Xbox One controller. It seems the new console will feature an upgraded version.CNET
From CNET
Microsoft will soon release a roomier model of its Xbox One gaming console complete with a new controller, judging from a now-vanished listing on Amazon.com.
The post by the e-commerce giant, spotted Friday by Eurogamer.net and since removed, lists features including a more spacious, 1-terabyte hard drive, for game and media storage, and a new controller that boasts a 3.5mm headset jack, which makes an adapter unnecessary.
A 1TB Xbox One was previously available only in last year's limited-edition Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare pack, Eurogamer.net notes (the current version of the Xbox One sports a 500GB hard drive). The site also reports a release date of June 15 -- the same day as Microsoft's Xbox press conferenceat the E3 2015 gaming confab -- and a price of $399. It says, too, that the console bundle includes a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. (All those details seem to have disappeared from the Amazon listing by the time the following screenshot was taken, however).
Screenshot by CNET
Microsoft declined to comment on the Amazon posting, saying only this: "We're gearing up for an exciting E3 where we'll showcase more games and experiences. We have nothing further to share at this time."
For the last year and a half, the Xbox One has been competing against Sony's PlayStation 4 for gamers' hearts, minds and dollars, and as time has gone by, the PS4 seems to have at least won the battle for unit sales.
Sony is also reportedly planning a 1TB version of its console.

Tech Deals of the Week: Republic Day Discounts on iPhone 5s, Nexus 6, More

tech_deals_of_the_week_jan_03.jpg
This week all major online retailers are celebrating Republic Day with flash sales throughout the extended weekend. We've picked out some of the best offers from the sales, along with some healthy tips to help you make the most out of these offers.
Pro tips for Republic Day weekend sales
Almost all major online retailers are running Republic Day sales this weekend. The sales start from today, and will run up to 26 January, 2015. Here are some tips to help you make the most of this weekend's massive flash sales:
  1. Always do a basic price check on other sites before hitting the buy now button on a deal. Most online retailers will match each other's prices during a sale. A basic rule of thumb is to do a price check on Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal to ensure you get the best offer.
  2. Keep mobile apps ready. Online retailers will push their mobile apps to increase usage, and will offer better discounts when you buy using their mobile apps. If you spot a great on the web, add it to the cart, but try and checkout from the mobile app itself.
  3. Bundle deals with cashback offers on specific cards. Flipkart has a cashback offer for HDFC Bank cards, while Amazon has a promotion on its mobile app purchases for HDFC Bank and American Express card useRs.You can get similar cashback offers on Snapdeal's website and mobile apps.
  4. Brace yourselves for slower deliveries. It's simple - if you want it quick, pay for a quicker delivery option if you get one. There's no point whining about slower deliveries after a massive flash sale weekend.

1. Google Nexus 6 32GB
You can grab a brand new Google Nexus 6 32GB for as low as Rs.40,990 on eBay this week. The Nexus flagship is normally available for Rs. 43,999. The Nexus 6 (Review |Pictures) features a 6-inch QHD AMOLED display running at a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating that should keep the display safe from minor scratches. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor, supported by 8GB of RAM. Nexus 6 features a 16-megapixel primary camera, and includes a dual LED flash to lighten up those dark interiors. The smartphone is a decent choice if you can handle a phone with a large display.

2. iPhone 5s Deals
iPhone 5s prices picked up after the Diwali sale last year. Even with the iPhone 6 launch in India, Apple India pretty much saw to it that the iPhone 5s prices don't fall to ridiculous levels. But with most online retailers now running Republic Day sales, there's a slight discount on iPhone 5s prices too. Both Amazon and Flipkart are selling the 16GB variant of the iPhone 5s for around Rs. 37,500. You can bundle this with a cashback offer applicable on both the sites to get another Rs. 2,000 off that price, making it a sweeter deal at Rs. 35,500. That would have to be the lowest price we've seen lately. You can use an HDFC Bank card to get an instant discount on Flipkart while checking out, or use an American Express or HDFC Bank card to get a cashback on Amazon's mobile app. Please note that you'll need to buy the iPhone 5s using Amazon's mobile app to avail the cashback offer, and cashback for American Express card users will be in the form of an Amazon gift card only.
Price: Rs. 35,500 (effective)

3. Xbox One and video games
You can expect a decent deal on an Xbox One every single time Amazon runs a massive flash sale. This time around Amazon is offering multiple Lightning Deals on the Xbox One console as well as the older Xbox 360 console. You can grab the Xbox One console bundled with Kinect, three games, and an additional controller for Rs. 40,990 (regular Rs. 45,990) during the sale. Amazon will also sell the standalone version of Xbox One (without Kinect) for around Rs. 35,000 (regular Rs. 39,990) during its Lightning Deals this weekend. Amazon is also selling Xbox One games at a discount this weekend. There are several games being sold for under Rs. 3,000 during the sale. You can get an additional 10% (maximum Rs. 2,000) cashback when you buy them on Amazon's mobile app, and pay using HDFC Bank cards.
4. Discounts on Amazon Kindle ebook readers
Amazon has slashed prices on its Kindle ebook readers by Rs. 1,000 on its Republic Day sale again. The discounts are valid on all Kindle variants, and are applicable till 26 January, 2015. You can buy the Kindle Paperwhite for Rs. 9,999 (regular Rs. 10,999), Kindle Paperwhite 3G for Rs. 12,999 (regular Rs.13,999), or the all-new Kindle with touchscreen support for Rs. 4,999 (regular Rs. 5,999). The all-new Kindle is the cheapest Kindle e-reader you can buy today, that comes with touchscreen support now. It's a great device for reading books. If you need an ebook reader with a backlight, go for the Kindle Paperwhite, and if you need 3G connectivity to buy and sync books on the go, get the Paperwhite 3G variant.
5. ADATA PT100 10000mAH power bank
If you're eyeing a decent 10000mAH power bank, possibly an alternative to the Mi 10000mAh power bank, the ADATA PT100 will definitely suit your needs. Amazon is selling this power bank at a lower price of Rs. 999 (MRP Rs. 2500) this weekend. That makes it equal to the Mi power bank in terms of pricing. The ADATA PT100 includes dual USB outlets, that means you can charge up to two devices at a time. It comes with a battery indicator that enables you to see how much juice you've got left in the power bank. There's an LED flashlight too, just in case you were looking for more features. The power bank comes with 1-year standard manufacturer warranty. This is as good as it gets at that price point of under Rs. 1,000.
Price: Rs. 999
6. Extra discounts on computer components at Snapdeal
If you're assembling your own PC this weekend, you might want to check prices at Snapdeal. The online retailer is offering an extra 7% discount on computer components above Rs. 1,499, up to 40% off on cabinets, and has a wide range of components to choose from. While all products may not match the offline retail price point, we found some components much cheaper than their offline retail counterparts. Power supply units from Corsair and Zeb are much cheaper than what most offline retailers are offering, and Snapdeal has a decent number of cooling fans to choose from. Snapdeal also has a limited period offer on the AMD FX-Series four-core edition. Bundle these with additional cashback offers from State Bank of India, HDFC, and American Express cards to get even sweeter overall discounts.

Xbox One price cut: What you need to know

  • by

  • PS4vsXBOXONE_09.jpg
The PlayStation 4's sales have topped the Xbox One's, but with a new price drop, Microsoft hopes that will change.Sarah Tew/CNET

With the release of Titanfall, Microsoft's console-exclusive first-person sci-fi shooter, the Xbox One got a nice sales bump this spring, but it hasn't been able to overtake the PS4, which has outsold the Xbox One at a rate of around 4 to 3.
Not surprisingly, that ratio's not so different from the price delta between the two game consoles, with the Xbox going out of the gate at $500 (Kinect peripheral included) while the PS4 selling for $400, sanscamera accessory. Oh, and to use most of the Xbox One's extra features, you had to sink another $60 on a yearly Xbox Live Gold subscription, so the real total was more like $560 compared to $400.
Well, on June 9, Microsoft will level the playing field with both a new $400 Xbox One (£350 in UK) and a revamped Xbox Live Gold package that's more in line with Sony's $50/£40-a-year PlayStation Plussubscription service.
Here's a quick guide to everything you need to know about the changes.

What's the difference between the $400 Xbox One and the $499 Xbox One?

From a hardware standpoint, the only difference is that you don't get the Kinect, the high-resolution camera peripheral that brings added features to the console. By the end of the year, you'll be able to purchase the Kinect separately, but Microsoft has yet to specify the price.

    Microsoft Xbox One
The $400 Xbox One does not include the Kinect peripheral.Sarah Tew/CNET

What do I lose without the Kinect?

You'll lose the ability to play games that require the Kinect -- but that's such a short list of titles, we doubt anyone will care. However, the lack of a Kinect comes into play in a big way with the console's TV and media-control features. Because the Kinect doubles as a microphone and an IR blaster, you'll lose the ability for any voice control and any motion-control input. You'll also lose the ability to change channels on your cable box and adjust the volume on your TV. You should also expect the $25 Xbox One Media Remote to lose some functionality (again, like TV volume control). Looking forward to theenhanced DVR controls that Microsoft has been touting for later this year? Too bad -- none of them will work without the Kinect. The same goes for log-in via face recognition or any other Kinect-dependent nicety.

Do I still have to buy Xbox Live Gold to access most of the console's extra features?

To do any multiplayer gaming, you still have to buy Xbox Live Gold (just as you have to purchase PlayStation Plus to do any multiplayer gaming on the PS4). But on Xbox One and Xbox 360, you'll no longer need a Live Gold subscription to access streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and HBO Go. A Live Gold subscription will also not be needed for some premium services on the Xbox One, such as OneGuide, Internet Explorer, and Skype. That's a big change.

What is still exclusive to Live Gold subscribers?

There will still be some services that are exclusive to Live Gold subscribers, including the "Games with Gold" program, cloud game saves, and Game DVR. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Games with Gold, Live Gold subscribers will receive an additional free Xbox 360 game in June. Additionally, Microsoft announced that both "Games with Gold" and "Deals with Gold" will come to the Xbox One in June.

What is Games with Gold, and how does it work?

When you subscribe to Sony's PlayStation Plus service, you can add certain games to your digital locker for free (as long as you're a subscriber, they remain in your locker, available to download when you want to play them). Each month, Sony serves up free games for the PS3, PS4, and PlayStation Vita, some of them former AAA titles.
Microsoft's Games with Gold works in much the same way. In its current Xbox 360 incarnation, you're allowed to keep the game "no matter what." Microsoft is currently serving up two free games a month (until the end of the year), one on the 1st of each month and one on the 16th. The program is coming to the Xbox One in June.

    playstation-plus-freebies.jpg
Microsoft has had to counter the rise of Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription service.Sony

What is Deals with Gold, and how does it work?

PlayStation Plus subscribers can buy certain game titles at a discount -- usually a small one -- each month. These games you get to hold onto even if you stop subscribing to PlayStation Plus.
Microsoft's Deals with Gold works in the same way. It's currently available for the Xbox 360 and will also hit the Xbox One in June. Some game discounts are exclusive to Gold subscribers, while others are also open to Xbox Live Silver subscribers (the free tier). For a look at the latest deals and other Xbox One news, you can always head to the Major Nelson blog, run by Larry Hryb, Director of Programming for Xbox Live (his gamertag is "Major Nelson").

How does this all affect current Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners?

If you're a Xbox Live Gold subscriber now, you'll get access to both Games with Gold and Deals with Gold on June 9, just as any new subscriber would. Also, if you're not a Gold subscriber, you'll suddenly have access to all those apps -- Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and so on -- that were behind the Gold wall before. (Of course, any separate subscription fees for each service will still apply.)

    Microsoft

What about the PS4 -- does it make a price drop likely for that too?

It's unclear what Sony will do, if anything. But if PS4 sales slow, expect Sony to find a way to make the PS4 look more appealing for the money. But we'd expect a game bundle more than a price drop at this point.

OK, so which of these Xbox Ones should I buy?

Some people love the fact that they can fully control their TV with their Xbox One, whether it's using the Xbox One controller or the voice- and motion-controls via the Kinect peripheral, (it not only has a built-in microphone but a built-in IR blaster for controlling your cable or satellite box). If you're in this camp, stick with the $499 version.
On the other hand, if you're just about the games and apps, and you don't want or need the Xbox One to be the lord of your home-entertainment system, go for the $400 version. You can always buy the Kinect later.

Microsoft says Xbox One sales cross five million

microsoft_xbo_one_sale_reuters.jpg
Microsoft Corp has sold over 5 million Xbox One video game consoles to retailers since its launch in November, the company said on Thursday.
In January, the U.S. software company said Xbox One sales had crossed three million as of the end of 2013.
The console went on sale on Nov. 22 in 13 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, a week before rival Sony Corp's PlayStation 4 was released. To fire up sales, Microsoft last month began offering a $450 bundle that included the console and the exclusive shooter game "Titanfall" from Electronic Arts Inc.
Sony Corp said on Wednesday it sold more than 7 million PlayStation 4 videogame consoles in just over four months to April 6, double the number of the older version, PlayStation 3, sold in about the same time frame after its launch.
Sony is struggling to keep pace with demand for the videogame console, the Japanese company said in a statement.
"Although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers," Andrew House, president and group chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, said in the statement.
Sales have outpaced those of PlayStation 3, which sold 3.5 million units between its launch in November 2006 and the end of March 2007, a Sony spokeswoman said.
The $399 PlayStation 4 went on sale on Nov. 29 in the United States, Western Europe and Latin America, around the same time that rival Microsoft Corp's Xbox One was released.
PlayStation 4 software sales - retail and digital - totalled 20.5 million copies worldwide by April 13, Sony said in the statement.
Gamers can expect to have a choice of 120 PlayStation 4 titles in 2014, including "Destiny" from Activision Blizzard Inc and "NBA 2K15" from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, according to the statement.

Sales of Sony's PlayStation 4 have surpassed the 6 million mark after less than four months, according to Sony.
Revealing the latest stats on Tuesday, Sony said that customers have purchased more than 6 million PS4 units globally as of Sunday. That number includes the 370,000 units sold in Japan since the console launched there on February 22.
The latest sales figure shows a steady rise from the 5.3 million units sold as of February 8 and the 2.1 million sold in the first two weeks following the PS4's initial launch in November. The console is currently available in 57 countries around the globe.
In Tuesday's news release, Sony also touted the PS4's social achievements. More than 100 million shares have been captured through the "Share" button on the PS4's wireless controller, while more than 3.6 million gameplay broadcasts have been sent out via the Twitch and Ustream streaming platforms.Software sales for the PS4 topped 13.7 million as of March 2, Sony added. That number covers both retail store sales and digital downloads from the PlayStation Store. Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription service has won over more than half of all PS4 owners, according to Sony. Ranging in price from $10 for one month to $50 for 12 months, PS Plusrewards PlayStation users with free games, discounts, and other benefits.
Other reports confirm the popularity of Sony's new console. In January, the PS4 beat Microsoft's Xbox One as the top-selling gaming console, NPD said last month. NPD didn't reveal specific numbers, but Bloomberg said that sales of the PS4 were almost double those of the Xbox One.

PS4 trumps the Xbox One as sales hit 5.3 million

A good holiday season for SonyBy Dave NealTue Feb 18 2014, 09:23Sony PlayStation 4 with controllerJAPANESE ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY Sony has sold 5.3 million Playstation 4 (PS4) games consoles in the few months that the machines have been on sale. The console launched last autumn in direct competition with the MicrosoftXbox One. Both Sony and Microsoft have spent the intervening months talking about how many they have sold. The last we heard, Xbox One sales had hit the three million mark.According to Sony it hit 5.3 million units sold on 8 February, then presumably it spent 10 days preparing its press statement. Those 10 days were well spent, and the firm is brimming with its success about its standing on the NPD sales rankings."I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," said Sony Computer Entertainment group CEO and president Andrew House."We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. Microsoft launches Xbox One SmartGlass app

(Credit: Microsoft)
Those of you aiming to buy the Xbox One can now download a companion SmartGlass app onto your mobile device.
Released or updated on Tuesday for iOS, AndroidWindows 8/8.1, and Windows Phone, Xbox One SmartGlass ties in with the Xbox One in a few different ways. You can use the app as a remote control device for the gaming console, letting you navigate the dashboard to play games or open various applications. The app also lets you browse the Web via the Xbox One using your mobile device.
Xbox One SmartGlass can act as a second screen, displaying or supplementing the action appearing on the console. Users of the app can also search for and select games to play on the Xbox One, track gaming achievements, get a helping hand on games, watch clips of games, and chat with friends.
But Xbox 360 owners need not feel left out. Microsoft also offers an Xbox 360 SmartGlass app.
The $500 Xbox One hits stores on Friday.

Carmakers look to video games for new routes to market

(Reuters) - The spoiler popped up automatically when the speedometer of the new Audi RS7 Sportback moved past 130 kilometers an hour on Charles Bridge in central Prague, creating just enough downforce to ensure the tires gripped the road around the next turn.
Racing through the city's scenic old quarter in the "Forza Motorsport 5" videogame is unnervingly realistic - not least thanks to the force-feedback steering wheel that makes the speeding driver struggle to keep control.
The upcoming Microsoft Xbox One game is also just one example of an increasingly symbiotic relationship between software developers and the auto industry. Together they get games fans behind the wheel and carmakers in pole position to woo today's younger consumers as tomorrow's car buyers.
Even if many of the players may not be able to afford to buy a car now, Volkswagen's Audi sponsors the game since it can start winning brand loyalty for the future. It is also well aware that driving games are not just enjoyed by the young.
"It's not just about reaching the youth - an Audi in a video game also reaches our core target group. Unlike in a movie where there is a straight narrative, a video game is interactive and the storyline is not defined in advance," said Kai Mensing, head of International Product Placement at the company.
Meanwhile Nissan competes on screens as a partner in Sony's rival PlayStation game "Gran Turismo", giving gamers the chance to enter a competition which starts with driving a Leaf electric car in their living rooms and could lead to actually racing a real 370Z sports car on Britain's Silverstone circuit.
"We take you all the way through to being a racing driver," said Gareth Dunsmore, general manager for marketing in Europe, adding that its "GT Academy" finalist Lucas Ordonez went on to a real world podium finish at the Le Mans 24 hour race in 2011.
Nissan's digital advertising spend has trebled in the last five years and is expected to top $500 million this year, roughly 25 percent of Nissan's overall advertising outlay.
"GT Academy is a great way for us to attract the gaming community to the brand. A million people have experienced this year driving an electric vehicle in a game," Dunsmore said.
PRODUCT PLACEMENT
Consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates in-game advertising will be a $2.8 billion industry worldwide this year. Carmakers say it is cheaper than product placement in films and they can even collect licensing fees for handing over their vehicle specifications to game developers.
Games industry analyst Brian Blau of Gartner, who once worked on licensing deals with carmakers, said auto companies are willing to pay as much as a million dollars if one of their cars is deeply integrated into the storyline of a video game, all the way down to appearing on the cover of the box.
"Advertisers are very keen on these kinds of immersive technologies," he said.
And carmakers need to stimulate demand amongst younger drivers.
In Germany, Europe's largest auto market and home to major car companies like VW, sales of vehicles to younger people have been in decline, with official data showing the share of new cars sold to people aged between 21 and 39 dropping each year since 2009 from 19.8 percent to 16.2 percent currently.
Whereas car sales have stagnated at around 3 million vehicles for years, video game sales in Germany rose for a third straight year in 2012 to a record 73.7 million. More importantly, over a quarter of the 26 million Germans that regularly played video games last year earn above-average incomes, taking home over 3,000 euros after tax every month.
For carmakers this means an audience expanding in size, increasing in affluence and diversifying in its base, and experts agree that product placement in video games can be an extremely effective tool to promote a brand.
"Gaming is a very engaging and captive environment that requires your full concentration. When people watch the Super Bowl on TV, however, they're multitasking - tweeting and commenting on their Facebook page throughout the game," said Dave Madden, senior vice-president of global media sales at games developer Electronic Arts.
German psychotherapist Bert te Wildt knows first-hand just how powerful, and even addictive, video games can be compared to other mediums having researched gaming dependency.
"The feeling of being behind the wheel of a fast car is far more intense when you drive it yourself in a digital world than when you watch it in a film, for instance," said te Wildt, a physician at Ruhr University's LWL Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy in Bochum.
"And now that these cyberspace vehicles are nearly photo-realistic, product placement in video games has become that much more attractive for carmakers," he added.
CROSS-MARKETING
And product placement is also attractive to videogames publishers.
Microsoft's "Forza Motorsport 5" and Sony's "Gran Turismo 6" have been nominated for the best titles for the Xbox and PlayStation consoles at this week's Gamescom convention in Cologne and Daimler had its gull-winged Mercedes-Benz SLS parked in front of Sony's press hall this week to promote the upcoming PlayStation 4 title "DriveClub".
But the automaker's interest goes well beyond racing games.
Caroline Pilz, head of product placement at Mercedes, said a campaign last year with SimCity Social, a form of Electronic Arts citybuilding game that was played on Facebook until recently, far exceeded its expectations in boosting the awareness and image of its A-Class car ahead of a crucial relaunch.
"Social gaming is a fantastic platform to go beyond the normal male audience that play racing games and instead reach females between 25-45 that don't read car magazines, who are in the perfect age to purchase compact cars like the A-Class," the head of product placement at Mercedes told Reuters.
Apart from allowing gamers to share achievements with friends and other players, online connectivity offers carmakers the added ability to tout their latest models in software updates that include exclusive downloadable content.
Just don't expect carmakers to have their vehicles driven around in September's hotly-anticipated "Grand Theft Auto V" game, since running over people with a BMW or Mercedes is not what the carmakers want to see.
One developer who asked not to be named said his car game did not feature any pedestrians or bystanders at all.
Even portraying vehicle crashes of the kind portrayed in Electronic Arts' "Need for Speed" is controversial, because it could spark safety concerns.

"We have very specific understandings of how we would show damage to a car," he said.
