Just as the short-lived Flappy Bird was becoming a distant memory, news broke today that the mobile game will return in August in multiplayer mode.
CNBC anchor Kelly Evans tweeted the announcement Wednesday night, following an interview with game creator Dong Nguyen on the network's Closing Bellprogram.
The 8-bit animated title hit the iTunes App Store in May 2013, but didn't make waves until its January release in the Google Play store; it
quickly reached the top of the charts on both platforms.
A simple premise—tap the screen to guide your bird through Super Mario-like pipes in the air—turned into one of the most addictive mobile games, with more than 18 million players reaching top scores of almost 10,000 points.
But the game's sudden fame and obsessive users became too much for Nguyen, who
announced in early February that he would remove Flappy Bird from app stores.
"I just cannot keep it anymore," he said at the time, denying any legal issues or having sold the game to another developer.
It didn't take long, however, for Nguyen to promise a Flappy Bird revival. The creator in March sent out
a series of tweets indicating that the title would be available for download again—"but not soon."
Nguyen, currently on a media tour, has made no formal announcement about an August launch, but told Evans that the upcoming release would be "less addictive."
