Instagram passes 200M active users

Instagram (Android)
Instagram has hit 200 million users, the photo-sharing service announced Tuesday, signaling a steady pace of growth for the social network.
The Facebook-owned company said its users have shared more than 20 billion photos to date. Six months ago, Instagram was at 150 million users, and a little more than a year ago it was at 100 million.
"Over the past six months, we've seen new communities coming together in cities and towns across the world, whether they be in Guthrie, Oklahoma, or Guatemala City," reads Instagram's blog. "With January's Worldwide InstaMeet 8, we saw record turnouts of communities coming together to form friendships, explore new places and celebrate creativity in all corners of the globe from New Dehli toNew YorkBucharestNairobi and beyond."
The company released its new numbers just after news surfaced that it was starting to distance itself from Foursquare, the service it was using to help users indicate where they were located when taking a photo. Instead, it will start using Facebook check-ins to generate places.
Instagram's latest numbers further emphasizes why this is a raw deal for Foursquare who could have benefited by exposure to Instagram's growing number of users.
