A good holiday season for SonyBy Dave NealTue Feb 18 2014, 09:23JAPANESE ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY Sony has sold 5.3 million Playstation 4 (PS4) games consoles in the few months that the machines have been on sale. The console launched last autumn in direct competition with the MicrosoftXbox One. Both Sony and Microsoft have spent the intervening months talking about how many they have sold. The last we heard, Xbox One sales had hit the three million mark.According to Sony it hit 5.3 million units sold on 8 February, then presumably it spent 10 days preparing its press statement. Those 10 days were well spent, and the firm is brimming with its success about its standing on the NPD sales rankings."I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," said Sony Computer Entertainment group CEO and president Andrew House."We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of Playstation fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."In December UK games industry body UKIE said that the launch of the PS4 broke an eight year old sales record set by the PSP pocket games machine, and eclipsed launch week sales of the PS3 and Xbox One.Sony sold 2.1 million PS4 consoles in its first two weeks and doubled that number by January.
