The gold iPhone 5s was reportedly called “The Kardashian Phone” by Apple employees. Kardashian, of course, referring to the star of E!’s “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” Kim Kardashian.
“A source at Apple told me while they were making the gold iPhone it was referred to internally as ‘The Kardashian Phone,’” Nick Bilton, a columnist for The New York Times, tweeted on Friday.
TechCrunch reports that it confirmed the nickname with its sources.
The tech site adds that the internal joke may be rooted in the reality TV star’s famous love of gold iPhones. Look no further than Kim’s Instagram account for a picture of her gold iPhone 5 from December 2012 for proof.
BGR reports that Kim’s fascination with gold iPhones may have waned (perhaps they’ve become too popular?) because she now has a black iPhone 5. BGR also speculates that Apple may have decided to make a gold iPhone after seeing how they caught after Kim and other celebrities tweeted about anodizing their iPhones.
Perhaps Kim wasn’t able to get her hands on a gold iPhone 5s. According to Apple Insider, a gold version of Apple’s new flagship iPhone model is hard to come by these days. The tech site noted in September that in Apple’s online store, models of the silver and space gray iPhone 5s have shipping times ranging between 7-10 business days.
However, the gold iPhone 5s model appeared to be out of stock (as of late September).
Whether she’s using a black iPhone or a gold iPhone, Kim loves using her phone to take pictures of herself. Here’s one of her post-pregnancy body in a barely-there outfit.
What do you think of Apple employees’ name for the gold iPhone 5s? Is is just a joke or was Apple’s decision to make a gold iPhone 5s influenced in any way by Kim’s Instagram marketing? Sound off in the comments section.
