Apple Unveils New, Super-Thin MacBook Computer –– Available in Gold

Apple Fanboys, get ready to toss your old MacBooks into the recycling bin. There’s a new laptop in town.
Today at Apple’s Spring Forward event, Apple introduced “the thinnest, lightest, most beautiful notebook we’ve ever made,” says Apple VP Phil Schiller. It’s a full 24 percent thinner than the current MacBook Air.
For $1299, the new MacBook will sport a 1.1-GHz Intel Core M processor, 8GB of memory, and 256 GB of solid state storage. Another $300 buys you a slightly faster processor and twice as much solid state memory.
Practically the only thing not new about Apple’s new flagship notebook is the name. It’s still just called a MacBook. Here are the highlights:
* The first all-metal MacBook, it weighs only 2 pounds and is just 13.1 millimeters thick. WiFi 802.11ac and Bluetooth antennae are built into the case.

* The 12.1-inch “retina display” features 3.3 million pixels.
* The pressure-sensitive Force Touch trackpad can differentiate between a light tap and deep press, then respond in different ways. For example, you can fast forward through a QuickTime video simply by pressing harder on the touch pad.
* It is first fanless Macbook ever, making it quieter and more energy efficient.
* Inside is a new high-density logic board that’s two thirds the size of the previous model. Squeezing the logicboard and using a variety of differently shaped batteries allows for 35 percent more battery, providing “all day performance” says Schiller. Apple promises 9 hours of continuous Web browsing or 10 hours of movie playback.
* A single USB-C port allows you to output video, transfer data, and charge the unit. (There are no other ports on the computer, aside from a headphone jack.)

Schiller also says the new MacBook will be the most environmentally friendly and efficient Macbook ever made, with an Energy Star rating of 6.1.
The new MacBook will be available in Apple Stores and online starting April 10.
